Elders and Deacons

The Presbyterian Church is governed by elders elected by the congregation for a three year term. Each elder is part of a class and a new class is elected every year so the entire board of elders, called the Session, is continually changing. Elders are ordained and adhere to the same vows as do those who are ordained to be pastors.

The deacons are elected like elders and also divided into three classes for three year terms. Deacons are elected by the congregation to serve those in need, and like elders, they are ordained for life and their ordinations are valid in all Presbyterian churches. They minister to the sick, the bereaved, the lonely and others in need.
