Music and Arts

The Arts, perhaps more than any other language, stimulate our whole being to experience that which we might not otherwise recognize. What better language then, than music and art, can we use to approach God and to be shaped by the Spirit? Building upon a long tradition, we at First Presbyterian Church provide music and arts opportunities for people of all ages and abilities to sing and pray with the Spirit using their own unique artistic voices.

Advent Season Concerts:

Musick's Feast Christmas Concert        Saturday, December 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Musick’s Feast, Iowa City’s early music ensemble, presents its annual Christmas concert featuring German chorale settings and English carols and madrigals. In what has become a tradition, the singers will perform a group of variations on the tune of "In dulci jubilo," as well as some beautiful anthems and motets in honor of the season.  Musick's Feast was founded in 2000, and since then has presented dozens of performances to widespread acclaim. Directed by Elizabeth Aubrey, professor emerita of music at the University of Iowa, the ensemble specializes in historically informed performances of music from the 12th through the 17th centuries. The group donates all concert proceeds to benefit hunger relief locally and around the world. Other members of the ensemble are Marvin and Darlene Bergman, Barb Evans O'Donnell, who is returning from her home in Oregon to perform in the Christmas concert, and John Spomer.  Mary Palmberg is president of the board of directors.

Tickets for the concert are $15, $12 for seniors, and $6 for students, and will be available at the door.

FPC Sanctuary Choir, orchestra and soloists present Antonio Vivaldi’s Magnificat during 10:30 a.m. worship. Magnificat, also known as the Song of Mary, tells the story from the Gospel of Luke of Mary’s visitation to Elizabeth and her song of  faith and thanksgiving to God.

Chamber Singers of Iowa City               Sunday, December 11 at 4:30 p.m.
